For those out of the loop of heavy, challenging music, Sumac is the recently formed trio of Aaron Turner (ISIS, Old Man Gloom, Mamiffer, Jodis, Lotus Eaters), Brian Cook (Botch, Russian Circles, These Arms Are Snakes), and Nick Yacyshyn (Baptists). What One Becomes, the follow-up to Sumac’s punishing debut album The Deal will be released on Thrill Jockey this summer. What One Becomes is available for preorder at Thrill Jockey’s website for CD and 2LP formats, including a limited version on clear vinyl. The album was mastered by James Plotkin, a longtime collaborator of Turner’s.
To keep their audience on the edge of their collective seats, Sumac has posted the album’s 2nd track “Rigid Man” on YouTube. One might find it difficult to comprehend how the band could get any heavier, yet they’ve managed to do so while expanding the depth and complexity of their compositions in the process.
